Youth Dance: Ballet, Jazz and Lyrical Classes Ages 5-18

Ballet:

  • Curriculum based on the best of the Russian, French, Italian, Danish, and English syllabi.
  • Designed for the serious ballet student and those students with diversified interests alike.
  • Dress code for ballet is a black leotard, pink tights and pink ballet shoes or pointe shoes; boys in a white t-shirt, black shorts or tights, and black ballet shoes.

THE APPROACH to teaching classical ballet at Contemporary Dance Academy is based on work developed by Mabel E. Todd in her book, “The Thinking Body” [1938], which is recognized as “a profound study of biomechanics, anatomy, kinesiology and physiology, all brought to bear on a study of movement education.” Todd’s work is further advanced in books by Sally Fitt and Lulu Sweigard, two prominent movement analysis specialists. Rather than restrict, limit or inhibit a teacher choreographically and creatively [as strict adherence to syllabus teaching can do], this approach expands a teacher’s ability to create classes that are challenging and motivating for the student, classes that are truly movement focused rather than picture and pose based. This approach places emphasis on how each individual student can achieve the (most) desirable results with the least amount of (wasted) effort and tension based on the individual student’s natural kinesthetic awareness [movement awareness] and physical assets with corrective attention paid to a dancer’s limitations, or physical challenges.

Jazz

Jazz combines many styles and techniques from ethnic and contemporary dance to ballet. Rhythm is particularly integral to jazz dance. The first half of class consists of exercises to stretch and strengthen muscles and develop support for proper stress-free alignment. Using jazz, soul, R&B, ethnic and pop music, jazz classes are a great work-out and a fun way to release tension while attaining a body awareness that can be applied to everyday activities and other dance styles.***Dress code for jazz is black form fitting clothes or leotard, and black jazz shoes.

Lyrical

Lyrical dance takes students on a journey that values artistic risk-taking and independent thinking.  Emphasis is placed on cultivating the dancers’ ability to recognize their individual gifts, realize their full potential, and express themselves through dance while developing a strong technical base. Lyrical dance provides an environment for the discovery of the students’ own creative power. ***Dress code for lyrical is black form fitting clothes or leotard, and black jazz shoes.
